Description
The 5mm Flame Sensor is an infrared receiver in a 5 mm through-hole package that responds to the near-infrared light given off by flames. Its output changes with the strength of the infrared light it sees, so with a resistor and an analog input you can tell when a flame, such as a candle or lighter, is in front of it. It is the bare sensing part used on many flame sensor modules, handy for building your own fire detection circuits and firefighting robots.
5mm Flame Sensor Specifications
- Type: infrared flame sensor (IR receiver)
- Package: 5 mm, through-hole, 2 leads
- Spectral range: about 760–1100 nm (near infrared)
- Output: analog; the current through the sensor rises with infrared intensity
- Pack size: 1 piece
5mm Flame Sensor Applications
- Flame and fire detection alarms in Arduino projects
- Candle-finding and firefighting robots
- Building a custom flame sensor module with a comparator such as the LM393
- Infrared source detection experiments
- STEM and robotics classes
What's in the Box
- 1 × 5 mm flame sensor
Tip: Wire the sensor in series with a resistor of about 10 kΩ between 5 V and GND and read the junction with an analog pin; if the reading does not change when a flame is near, swap the sensor's leads. Sunlight and filament bulbs also give off infrared and can trigger it. This is a hobby sensor, not a certified fire alarm, so never leave a test flame unattended.
