Description
The MAX7219 Dot Led Matrix Module is an LED dot matrix display board driven by the MAX7219 LED driver chip, supplied with a connecting cable. One MAX7219 controls a full 8 × 8 matrix (64 LEDs) by itself, taking care of multiplexing and brightness, so your Arduino or ESP32 only needs three data pins. Modules can be chained to build scrolling text signs, scoreboards, clocks and simple animations.
MAX7219 Dot Led Matrix Module Specifications
- Driver IC: MAX7219 serial LED display driver
- LEDs per driver: 64, arranged as 8 × 8

- Supply: 5 V
- Input pins: VCC, GND, DIN, CS, CLK
- Brightness: 16 levels, set in software
- Chaining: DOUT of one module feeds DIN of the next
MAX7219 Dot Led Matrix Module Applications
- Scrolling text and message displays
- Clocks, counters and scoreboards
- Icons and simple animations for robots and games
- Learning SPI communication and display multiplexing
What's in the Box
- 1 × MAX7219 dot LED matrix module
- 1 × connecting cable
Tip: Use the LedControl or MD_MAX72XX / MD_Parola libraries in the Arduino IDE. With all LEDs on at full brightness the module can draw a few hundred milliamps, so lower the brightness in code or use a separate 5 V supply when chaining modules. The MAX7219 expects 5 V logic, so with a 3.3 V ESP32 a level shifter gives the most reliable results.
