Description

The MQ-5 liquefied gas Methane Gas Sensor module detects LPG, natural gas (methane) and town gas. Its tin dioxide sensing element lowers its resistance when these gases are present, and the module gives an analog output for measuring gas levels plus a digital output that switches at a threshold you set with the on-board potentiometer. It is well suited to kitchen and gas cylinder leak alarms built with Arduino or ESP32.

MQ-5 liquefied gas Methane Gas Sensor Specifications

  • Sensor: MQ-5 metal-oxide (tin dioxide) gas sensor
  • Detects: LPG, natural gas, methane and town gas; much less sensitive to alcohol and smoke
  • Detection range (datasheet): 200–10000 ppm
  • Supply voltage: 5 V (heater 5 V ± 0.1 V)
  • Heater power: 800 mW or less
  • Outputs: AO (analog voltage) and DO (digital, threshold set with the potentiometer)
  • Pins: VCC, GND, DO, AO

MQ-5 liquefied gas Methane Gas Sensor Applications

  • LPG and natural gas leak alarms for kitchens and gas cylinders
  • Switching a buzzer, relay or extractor fan when gas is detected
  • Phone alerts over Wi-Fi with ESP32 or ESP8266
  • Gas sensing experiments in schools and universities

What's in the Box

  • 1 × MQ-5 gas sensor module

Tip: Power the module from 5 V and let the heater warm up for a few minutes before trusting the readings; run a new sensor for 24 hours or more before calibrating. The sensor gets warm in normal use. This module is great for hobby alarms and learning, but it is not a certified gas detector, so do not rely on it alone for safety.
