Ceramic Capacitor 400pF 430V 431K 5pcs

The Ceramic Capacitor 400pF 430V 431K sold here is a 431K metal oxide varistor (MOV), supplied in a pack of 5. It looks like a ceramic disc capacitor, but it works as a voltage-dependent resistor: below about 430 V it passes almost no current, and when a surge or spike pushes the voltage higher its resistance drops sharply and it clamps the spike, protecting the circuit behind it. The 431K is the usual varistor for 230 V mains equipment.

Tip: Fit the varistor after the fuse, directly across live and neutral, so the fuse blows if the varistor fails short after a large surge. Varistors wear a little with every surge, so replace any that look cracked, swollen or burnt, and only work on mains circuits with the power disconnected.
