Tip: Connect the cathode (band end) to the positive side so the diode is reverse biased, and always use a series resistor: R = (Vin − 51 V) ÷ I. For example, from 60 V at 5 mA use about 1.8 kΩ; the Zener then dissipates about 0.26 W, safely below 0.5 W.
