Description
The Crystal Oscillator 8MHz is an 8 MHz quartz crystal used as a stable, accurate clock source for microcontrollers and digital circuits. Connected to the oscillator pins of a microcontroller with two small load capacitors, it sets the clock frequency far more precisely than an internal RC oscillator. 8 MHz is a common value for STM32F103 boards such as the Blue Pill, for ATmega328P designs running at 3.3 V and for PIC projects.
Crystal Oscillator 8MHz Specifications
- Frequency: 8 MHz
- Type: quartz crystal, two-terminal (passive), driven by the microcontroller's oscillator circuit
- Load capacitors: typically 15–33 pF, commonly 22 pF, one from each pin to GND
- Polarity: none, can be fitted either way round
Crystal Oscillator 8MHz Applications
- External (HSE) clock for STM32F103 boards
- ATmega328P and other AVR chips running at 8 MHz, for example from 3.3 V
- PIC microcontrollers in HS oscillator mode
- Accurate timing for clocks, timers and serial communication
- Digital electronics and microcontroller labs
What's in the Box
- 1 × 8 MHz crystal
Tip: Connect the crystal between the OSC1 and OSC2 (XTAL1 and XTAL2, or OSC_IN and OSC_OUT on STM32) pins, with a 22 pF ceramic capacitor from each pin to GND, and keep the leads short. On a PIC select HS mode in the configuration bits, and on an AVR set the fuses for an external crystal.
