Tip: To show a pattern, the rows are lit one after another very quickly (multiplexing). A MAX7219 driver or 74HC595 shift registers with current-limiting resistors save microcontroller pins; the pin numbers do not follow the row order, so check the 1088BS pinout before wiring.
