Description

The 8x8 Red 64 LED Dot Matrix display has 64 red 3 mm LEDs set in a grid of 8 rows and 8 columns, with a common cathode (CC) layout. By lighting the dots in quick succession you can show characters, numbers, arrows and small graphics. It is a popular part for learning how LED multiplexing works and for building scrolling signs, clocks and simple games with Arduino or ESP32.

8x8 Red 64 LED Dot Matrix Specifications

  • Matrix: 8 × 8, 64 LEDs
  • LED colour: red
  • Dot size: 3 mm
  • Configuration: common cathode (CC): the cathodes of the LEDs on each line share one pin, and the anodes are connected along the other axis
  • Typical forward voltage: about 2 V per red LED

8x8 Red 64 LED Dot Matrix Applications

  • Scrolling text and message boards
  • Clocks, timers and score displays
  • Arduino games such as Snake and Pong
  • Arrow, emoji and status icons
  • Classroom lessons on multiplexing and driver ICs

What's in the Box

  • 1 × 8x8 red LED dot matrix display, 3 mm, common cathode

Tip: Scan one cathode line at a time by pulling it low while setting the anode lines high for the dots you want, with a current-limiting resistor on each anode line. The MAX7219 driver is designed for common-cathode displays and handles the scanning and current setting for you. Pin numbers do not follow the row order, so map the pins with a multimeter in diode mode first.
