Decade Counter CD4017

The Decade Counter CD4017 is a CMOS counter IC with ten decoded outputs, Q0 to Q9. Each clock pulse moves a single high output to the next pin, and after the tenth count it starts again, which makes it ideal for running lights, sequencers and divide-by-10 circuits. Paired with a 555 timer, it is one of the most popular ICs for learning digital electronics.

Tip: Connect clock inhibit (pin 13) and reset (pin 15) to GND when you are not using them, because floating CMOS inputs cause random counting. To count fewer than 10 steps, connect the output after your last step to the reset pin. Handle the IC with care, as CMOS parts are sensitive to static.
