DIAC DB3 32V

The DIAC DB3 32V is a bidirectional trigger diode that stays off until the voltage across it reaches its breakover voltage of about 32 V, in either direction, and then switches on and delivers a sharp current pulse. It is the standard trigger device for TRIACs in light dimmers, motor speed controllers and heater controls.

Tip: In a basic dimmer, a potentiometer and capacitor charge until the DB3 breaks over at about 32 V, which fires the TRIAC gate; the potentiometer sets the delay and so the brightness. These circuits run on mains voltage, so build and test them only with proper insulation and safety precautions.
