Description

The Sound Sensor Sparkfun SEN-12642, sold by SparkFun as the Sound Detector, is a small microphone board with three outputs in one: the raw audio signal, an envelope that follows the loudness, and a gate output that switches high when sound is detected. This makes it easy to react to claps, knocks and noise levels with an Arduino or ESP32.

Sound Sensor Sparkfun SEN-12642 Specifications

  • Microphone: electret capsule
  • Amplifier: LMV324 op-amp, about 40 dB gain by default (adjustable with a resistor)
  • Audio output: raw signal biased at half the supply voltage, ready for an ADC
  • Envelope output: analog voltage that rises with loudness
  • Gate output: digital high when sound is detected, with hysteresis
  • Indicator: red LED that lights with sound
  • Supply voltage: 3.5–5.5 V (5 V recommended)
  • Connections: 0.1 in (2.54 mm) pin holes along the board edge

Sound Sensor Sparkfun SEN-12642 Applications

  • Clap switches and knock detectors
  • Noise level monitoring and sound meters
  • Sound-reactive LEDs and displays
  • Robots that respond to sound

What's in the Box

  • 1 × SparkFun Sound Detector board (SEN-12642)

Tip: Power the board from a clean 5 V supply; ripple on the supply shows up as noise in the outputs. Read the envelope output with an analog pin for loudness, or the gate output with a digital pin for simple on/off sound detection.
