Tip: Fit the diode with the band (cathode) towards the positive side and add a series resistor: R = (Vin − 10 V) ÷ I. From a 12 V supply at 20 mA that is 100 Ω, dissipating about 0.04 W in the resistor and 0.2 W in the zener.
