Tip: Always use a series resistor to limit the current. For example, from a 24 V supply with a 20 mA load, R = (24 V − 12 V) ÷ 40 mA = 300 Ω, which leaves about 20 mA flowing through the Zener; that resistor dissipates about 0.5 W, so use a 1 W type. Fit the diode with the band (cathode) towards the positive side.
