Tip: Resistors have no polarity, so they can be fitted either way round. With a red LED (about 2 V) on a 5 V pin, 220 Ω gives roughly 14 mA, a safe current for most 5 mm LEDs. The 0.5 W limit is reached at about 10.5 V across the resistor.
