Tip: Resistors have no polarity, so they can be fitted either way round. With 680 Ω, the 0.25 W limit is reached at about 13 V across the resistor (about 19 mA). A red LED on 12 V through 680 Ω draws about 15 mA and the resistor dissipates about 0.15 W; for higher supply voltages, choose a larger value or a 0.5 W resistor.
