Tip: Resistors have no polarity, so they can be fitted either way round. With 36 Ω, the 0.5 W limit is reached at about 4.2 V across the resistor (about 118 mA). Connected straight across 5 V it would dissipate about 0.7 W, which is too much, so always check P = V² / R first.
