Tip: With a red LED (about 2 V) on a 5 V supply, a 390 Ω resistor gives roughly 7.7 mA, which is bright enough for an indicator and easy on the LED. Resistors have no polarity, and the 0.5 W limit is only reached at about 14 V across the resistor.
