Description

The 4 Bit Comparator 7485 is a 7400-series magnitude comparator IC that compares two 4-bit binary numbers, A and B, and shows the result on three outputs: A greater than B, A equal to B and A less than B. Cascading inputs let you chain several 7485 chips to compare 8-bit, 12-bit or wider numbers, which makes it a common part in digital electronics labs.

4 Bit Comparator 7485 Specifications

  • Function: 4-bit magnitude comparator, A3–A0 against B3–B0
  • Outputs: A>B, A=B and A<B
  • Cascading inputs: IA>B, IA=B and IA<B for comparing wider numbers
  • Logic family: 7400 series
  • Supply voltage: 5 V
  • Package: 16-pin DIP, through-hole
  • Pinout: 1 B3, 2 IA<B, 3 IA=B, 4 IA>B, 5 OA>B, 6 OA=B, 7 OA<B, 8 GND, 9 B0, 10 A0, 11 B1, 12 A1, 13 A2, 14 B2, 15 A3, 16 VCC

4 Bit Comparator 7485 Applications

  • Digital logic lab experiments on binary comparison
  • Comparing a counter value with a preset number in timers and controllers
  • Simple ALU and address decoding projects
  • Cascading two chips for 8-bit comparison

What's in the Box

  • 1 × 7485 4-bit magnitude comparator IC

Tip: When you use a single 7485, or for the least significant chip in a cascade, connect the IA=B input (pin 3) to VCC and the IA>B and IA<B inputs (pins 4 and 2) to GND. Place a 100 nF capacitor between pins 16 and 8, close to the chip.
