Description
The 8 Bit Shift Register 74165 is a parallel-in, serial-out (PISO) logic IC. It captures the state of 8 inputs at once and then shifts them out one bit at a time on a single serial line. This lets an Arduino, ESP32 or Raspberry Pi read 8 buttons, switches or digital signals using only 3 pins, and several chips can be chained for 16, 24 or more inputs.
8 Bit Shift Register 74165 Specifications
- Function: 8-bit parallel-load shift register, parallel in, serial out
- Inputs: 8 parallel data inputs (A–H) plus a serial input (SER) for chaining
- Outputs: serial output QH and its complement
- Control pins: SH/LD (shift or load), CLK and CLK INH (clock inhibit)
- Pins: 16
- Supply: 5 V logic
8 Bit Shift Register 74165 Applications
- Reading many push buttons or DIP switches with few microcontroller pins
- Expanding the digital inputs of Arduino, ESP32 and Raspberry Pi
- Keypads, control panels and game controllers
- Learning serial data transfer in digital logic classes
What's in the Box
- 1 × 74165 8-bit shift register IC
Tip: Pull SH/LD low briefly to load the 8 inputs, set it high, then clock the bits out of QH; tie CLK INH to ground if you do not use it. Give each input a pull-up or pull-down resistor so unpressed buttons do not float. To drive outputs such as LEDs, use a 74HC595 instead.
