Description
The 8x8 Red 64 LED Dot Matrix display packs 64 red 3 mm LEDs into a square grid of 8 rows and 8 columns. Each LED can be lit on its own, so you can show letters, numbers, icons and scrolling text. This version is common anode (CA), and it is a classic part for learning multiplexing with Arduino and for building signs, games and clocks.
8x8 Red 64 LED Dot Matrix Specifications
- Matrix: 8 × 8, 64 LEDs
- LED colour: red
- Dot size: 3 mm

- Pins: 16 (8 anode lines and 8 cathode lines)
- Typical forward voltage: about 2 V per red LED
8x8 Red 64 LED Dot Matrix Applications
- Scrolling text signs and message boards
- Arduino games such as Snake
- Clocks, counters and score displays

What's in the Box
- 1 × 8x8 red LED dot matrix display, 3 mm, common anode
Tip: Never connect the matrix straight to a supply: add a current-limiting resistor on each cathode line and scan one anode line at a time (multiplexing), or use a driver IC such as the MAX7219, with its segment outputs on the anode lines and its digit outputs on the cathode lines. Pin numbering varies between makers, so test the pins with a multimeter in diode mode before wiring.
