Description
The Audio Amplifier IC LM386L is a low-voltage audio power amplifier with 8 pins, the lead-free version of the classic LM386. It runs from 4 V to 12 V, needs only a few external parts and can drive a small 8 Ω speaker directly, which makes it the usual choice for mini speakers, intercoms, radios and Arduino sound projects.
Audio Amplifier IC LM386L Specifications
- Type: low-voltage audio power amplifier (LM386, lead-free L version)
- Supply voltage: 4 V to 12 V
- Voltage gain: 20 (26 dB) with pins 1 and 8 open, up to 200 (46 dB) with 10 µF between pins 1 and 8
- Output power: up to about 0.7 W into 8 Ω at 9 V (10% THD)
- Quiescent current: about 4 mA at 6 V
- Pinout: 1 and 8 gain, 2 −input, 3 +input, 4 GND, 5 output, 6 VCC, 7 bypass
Audio Amplifier IC LM386L Applications
- Small speaker amplifiers and portable radios
- Intercoms and baby monitors
- Sound output for Arduino, ESP32 and 555 tone circuits
- Guitar mini amps and practice amplifiers
- Audio signal tracers for testing circuits
What's in the Box
- 1 × LM386L audio amplifier IC
Tip: Connect the speaker to pin 5 through a 220–250 µF capacitor, add 0.05 µF in series with 10 Ω from pin 5 to GND to keep it stable, and decouple VCC with about 100 µF close to the chip. The LM386 has a lot of gain, so turn a microcontroller signal down with a potentiometer before feeding it in.
