Description
The BCD to 7-Seg Decoder 7448 is a 7400-series IC that converts a 4-bit binary-coded decimal (BCD) input into the seven segment signals needed to show the digits 0 to 9 on a common cathode LED display. Its outputs are active HIGH with internal pull-up resistors, and it adds lamp test and ripple blanking inputs, which makes it a favourite in digital electronics labs for counters and clocks.
BCD to 7-Seg Decoder 7448 Specifications
- Function: BCD to 7-segment decoder/driver
- Display type: common cathode (active-HIGH outputs)
- Outputs: segments a to g, with internal 2 kΩ pull-up resistors
- Inputs: A, B, C, D (BCD), /LT (lamp test), /RBI (ripple blanking input) and /BI-/RBO (blanking input / ripple blanking output)
- Logic family: 7400 series
- Supply voltage: 5 V
- Package: 16-pin DIP
- Power pins: pin 16 = VCC, pin 8 = GND
BCD to 7-Seg Decoder 7448 Applications
- Showing counter outputs, for example from a 7490 decade counter, on a 7-segment display
- Digital clocks, timers and scoreboards in electronics labs
- Teaching binary, BCD and combinational logic
- Blanking leading zeros in multi-digit displays
What's in the Box
- 1 × 7448 BCD to 7-segment decoder IC
Tip: Use it with a common cathode display such as a 0.56 inch 1-digit CC display. The internal 2 kΩ pull-ups supply only a small current, so the segments can look dim; for full brightness add a transistor buffer on each segment. Tie /LT and /RBI to 5 V for normal operation.
