Description
The BCD to Decimal Decoder IC 7442 is a 7400-series logic chip that converts a 4-bit binary-coded decimal (BCD) input into one of ten outputs. For each input from 0 to 9, the matching output goes LOW while the other nine stay HIGH, and the invalid codes 10 to 15 leave all outputs HIGH. It is a standard part in digital electronics labs for counters, selectors and LED displays.
BCD to Decimal Decoder IC 7442 Specifications
- Function: 4-line BCD to 10-line decimal decoder
- Inputs: A, B, C and D (A is the least significant bit)
- Outputs: 0 to 9, active LOW
- Invalid inputs: codes 10 to 15 give all outputs HIGH
- Logic family: 7400 series
- Supply voltage: 5 V
- Package: 16-pin DIP
- Power pins: pin 16 = VCC, pin 8 = GND
BCD to Decimal Decoder IC 7442 Applications
- Driving 10 LEDs from a 7490 decade counter for a running light
- Selecting one of ten devices or channels from a 4-bit code
- Use as a 3-to-8 line decoder on outputs 0 to 7, with input D as an enable
- Teaching BCD, decoders and combinational logic
- Digital lab experiments and university practicals
What's in the Box
- 1 × 7442 BCD to decimal decoder IC
Tip: Because the outputs are active LOW, connect each LED with its cathode to the output and its anode to 5 V through a 470 Ω resistor; the selected LED then lights. Add a 100 nF capacitor between pins 16 and 8, close to the chip.
