Description
The Darlington Transistor TIP120 is an NPN Darlington power transistor in a TO-220 package, rated for 60 V and 5 A continuous collector current (8 A peak). Two transistors in one package give a DC current gain of at least 1000, so a few milliamps from an Arduino or ESP32 pin are enough to switch DC motors, solenoids, relays and LED strips.
Darlington Transistor TIP120 Specifications
- Type: NPN Darlington
- Collector-emitter voltage (VCEO): 60 V
- Collector current: 5 A continuous, 8 A peak
- Base current: 120 mA maximum
- DC current gain (hFE): 1000 minimum at 0.5 A and 3 A
- Saturation voltage (VCE(sat)): 2 V at 3 A, up to 4 V at 5 A
- Power dissipation: 65 W with the case at 25 °C (heatsink needed), 2 W in free air
- Built-in parts: collector-emitter protection diode and base-emitter resistors
- Package and pinout: TO-220, pins base, collector, emitter (B-C-E); the tab is the collector
- PNP complement: TIP125
Darlington Transistor TIP120 Applications
- Driving DC motors and pumps from a microcontroller
- Switching 12 V LED strips
- Solenoids, relays and electromagnets
- Robotics and STEM projects
What's in the Box
- 1 × TIP120 NPN Darlington transistor
Tip: Use a resistor of about 1 kΩ between the microcontroller pin and the base, connect the load between the supply and the collector, and connect the emitter to ground. Because the saturation voltage is about 2 V, the TIP120 gets warm at high currents, so fit a heatsink above about 1 A. Add a flyback diode across motors and solenoids.
