Description

The GY-271 HMC5883L 3 axis module is a magnetic field sensor board that measures the Earth's magnetic field on the X, Y and Z axes. Its main use is as a digital compass: read the field values over I2C and calculate the heading for robots, drones, rovers and navigation projects with an Arduino, ESP32 or Raspberry Pi.

GY-271 HMC5883L Specifications

  • Sensor: HMC5883L 3-axis magnetometer
  • Field range: ±0.88 to ±8.1 gauss, selectable
  • Resolution: 12-bit ADC
  • Heading accuracy: 1–2° after calibration
  • Output rate: up to 75 Hz in continuous mode, up to 160 Hz in single-measurement mode
  • Interface: I2C, address 0x1E
  • Module supply: 3–5 V on typical GY-271 boards, which carry a 3.3 V regulator

GY-271 HMC5883L Applications

  • Digital compass for robots, rovers and boats
  • Heading hold in drones and RC models
  • Detecting nearby magnets or ferrous metal
  • Vehicle and door detection by magnetic field change

What's in the Box

  • 1 × GY-271 3-axis magnetic field sensor module

Tip: Many newer GY-271 boards carry the compatible QMC5883L chip, which uses I2C address 0x0D and needs a different library. Run an I2C scan: 0x1E means HMC5883L and 0x0D means QMC5883L. Mount the board level, away from motors and magnets, and calibrate it before use.
