Description

The 7809 - 9V Regulator is a three-pin fixed positive linear regulator from the 78xx family that turns a higher DC voltage, such as 12 V, into a steady 9 V output. It has built-in current limiting and thermal shutdown, so it is a simple and reliable way to power 9 V circuits, audio preamps, sensors and modules from a battery, adapter or rectified transformer.

7809 - 9V Regulator Specifications

  • Output voltage: 9 V fixed (positive)
  • Output current: up to 1 A with a heatsink (1.5 A on L7809-type versions)
  • Input voltage: at least about 11 V, 35 V maximum
  • Dropout voltage: about 2 V
  • Protection: internal current limiting, thermal shutdown and safe-area protection
  • Pinout (TO-220 version, front view, left to right): 1 input, 2 ground, 3 output

7809 - 9V Regulator Applications

  • 9 V supplies for audio preamps, effects pedals and radios
  • Powering Arduino boards through VIN or the barrel jack from 12 V sources
  • Regulating a rectified 12 V transformer output
  • Electronics labs and power supply projects

What's in the Box

  • 1 × 7809 9 V voltage regulator

Tip: Fit a 0.33 µF capacitor at the input and a 0.1 µF capacitor at the output, close to the pins. The regulator turns the extra voltage into heat, (Vin − 9 V) × current, so 12 V in at 0.5 A means 1.5 W, which already needs a small heatsink.
