Description
The L7905 is a three-terminal linear voltage regulator with a fixed negative output of -5 V. It is the negative partner of the 7805: feed it a negative input voltage and it delivers a steady -5 V rail at up to 1.5 A, with built-in thermal overload and short-circuit protection. Use it to build split (±5 V) power supplies for op-amps, audio and analog circuits.
L7905 Specifications
- Type: fixed negative linear voltage regulator (79xx series)
- Output voltage: -5 V
- Output current: up to 1.5 A (with a suitable heatsink)
- Input voltage: at least about 2 V more negative than the output (for example -7 V), maximum -35 V
- Protection: thermal overload, short-circuit and output safe-area protection
- Pinout (TO-220): 1 = ground, 2 = input, 3 = output
L7905 Applications
- Negative -5 V rail for dual (split) power supplies
- Op-amp and analog audio circuits that need ±5 V
- Bench power supply and lab projects together with a 7805
- Bias circuits and sensor interfaces that need a negative supply
What's in the Box
- 1 × L7905 -5 V voltage regulator
Tip: The L7905 pinout is not the same as the 7805, and on the TO-220 package the metal tab is connected to the input, so insulate it if it shares a heatsink with other parts. Fit capacitors on the input and output (for example 2.2 µF and 1 µF) close to the pins for stable operation.
