LCD1602 without backlight

The LCD1602 without backlight is a 16 × 2 character LCD that shows two lines of 16 characters. With no backlight it uses less power than the backlit version and is easy to read in daylight or a well-lit room. It uses the standard HD44780-compatible controller, so it works with the Arduino LiquidCrystal library straight away.

Tip: Connect a 10 kΩ potentiometer to V0 to set the contrast; without it the screen may look blank. In 4-bit mode you only need six Arduino pins (RS, E and D4–D7), with RW tied to ground.
