Description

The LM335 Temperature Sensor is a precision analog temperature sensor IC that works like a two-terminal Zener diode whose voltage rises by 10 mV for every kelvin of temperature. At 25 °C it gives about 2.98 V, so a microcontroller can read the temperature directly with an analog input. A third pin allows simple one-point calibration for better accuracy.

LM335 Temperature Sensor Specifications

  • Type: analog Zener-type temperature sensor, 3 pins (+, − and ADJ)
  • Output: 10 mV/K, proportional to absolute temperature
  • Output at 25 °C: about 2.98 V
  • Operating range: -40 °C to +100 °C
  • Operating current: 400 µA to 5 mA
  • Dynamic impedance: less than 1 Ω
  • Calibration: ADJ pin for one-point calibration

LM335 Temperature Sensor Applications

  • Room and enclosure temperature monitoring
  • Analog temperature readings with Arduino and PIC microcontrollers
  • Battery charger temperature protection
  • Thermostats and fan control circuits
  • Teaching analog sensors in electronics labs

What's in the Box

  • 1 × LM335 temperature sensor

Tip: Feed the sensor through a series resistor so that about 1 mA flows; with a 5 V supply, about 2 kΩ works well. Read the voltage at the + pin and convert it with: temperature in °C = (voltage ÷ 0.01) − 273.15.
