Description
The LM393 IC is a dual voltage comparator: it contains two independent comparators that each compare two input voltages and switch their output depending on which one is higher. It runs from a single supply as low as 2 V, draws very little current and has open-collector outputs, which makes it a common choice for sensor modules, threshold detectors and interfacing analog signals with Arduino and ESP32 boards.
LM393 IC Specifications
- Function: dual differential voltage comparator
- Supply voltage: 2–36 V single supply, or ±1 to ±18 V dual supply
- Supply current: about 0.4 mA (typical)
- Outputs: open collector, need a pull-up resistor
- Input range: includes ground (0 V)
- Pins: 8 (1: OUT1, 2: IN1−, 3: IN1+, 4: GND, 5: IN2+, 6: IN2−, 7: OUT2, 8: VCC)
LM393 IC Applications
- Light, sound, soil moisture and IR sensor modules
- Battery low-voltage and over-voltage detectors
- Converting analog signals into clean digital levels
- Window comparators, oscillators and zero-cross detectors
What's in the Box
- 1 × LM393 dual comparator IC
Tip: Because the outputs are open collector, add a pull-up resistor (for example 10 kΩ) from each output to your logic supply, such as 5 V or 3.3 V. This also lets the LM393 feed a 3.3 V microcontroller safely while the comparator itself runs from a higher supply.
