Description
The LM7905CT is a fixed negative linear voltage regulator that turns a negative DC input, such as -9 V or -12 V, into a steady -5 V output. It is the negative counterpart of the 7805 and is mostly used together with it to build dual-rail ±5 V supplies for op-amps, audio circuits, ADCs and test equipment. It comes in a TO-220 package with built-in current limiting and thermal shutdown.
LM7905CT Specifications
- Output voltage: -5 V fixed
- Output current: up to 1.5 A (with a suitable heatsink)
- Input voltage: about -7 V to -25 V in normal use, -35 V maximum
- Protection: internal current limiting and thermal shutdown
- Package: TO-220, 3 pins
- Pinout (front view, left to right): 1 ground, 2 input, 3 output; the tab is connected to the input
LM7905CT Applications
- ±5 V dual supplies together with a 7805
- Negative rails for op-amps, comparators and ADC circuits
- Bench and lab power supplies built from a centre-tapped transformer
- Audio, instrumentation and repair work
What's in the Box
- 1 × LM7905CT -5 V voltage regulator
Tip: The 7905 pinout is different from the 7805, so check it before soldering. Because the tab is the input, insulate it from a grounded heatsink with a mica pad and washer. Fit capacitors close to the pins, about 2.2 µF at the input and 1 µF at the output, as the datasheet recommends.
