Description

The MCP3001 IC is a 10-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) from Microchip with one pseudo-differential input and a simple SPI serial interface. It is a low-cost way to add an analog input to a Raspberry Pi, which has no built-in ADC, or to get a separate, stable ADC for Arduino, ESP32 and other microcontroller projects.

MCP3001 IC Specifications

  • Function: 10-bit successive-approximation ADC
  • Inputs: 1 pseudo-differential input (IN+ and IN−)
  • Interface: SPI-compatible serial (CS/SHDN, CLK, DOUT)
  • Sample rate: up to 200 ksps at 5 V, 75 ksps at 2.7 V
  • Supply voltage: 2.7 V to 5.5 V
  • Accuracy: ±1 LSB INL and DNL (max)
  • Standby current: 5 nA typical
  • Pins: 8 (VREF, IN+, IN−, VSS, CS/SHDN, DOUT, CLK, VDD)

MCP3001 IC Applications

  • Adding an analog input to the Raspberry Pi
  • Reading potentiometers, LDRs, thermistors and other analog sensors
  • Battery and voltage monitoring
  • Data acquisition and instrumentation projects
  • Learning SPI communication and ADC basics

What's in the Box

  • 1 × MCP3001 10-bit ADC IC

Tip: The MCP3001 only sends data (it has no DIN pin), so you just pull CS low and clock the result out on DOUT. Connect VREF to a stable reference, often VDD, and fit a 100 nF decoupling capacitor between VDD and VSS close to the chip.
