Description

The Mercury Tilt Switch Module is a small sensor board built around a sealed glass mercury switch. When the module is tilted, a drop of mercury inside the capsule moves and connects or disconnects two contacts, giving a simple on/off signal that a microcontroller can read. It is an easy way to detect tilting, tipping or a change in orientation in Arduino, ESP32 and school projects.

Mercury Tilt Switch Module Specifications

  • Sensing element: sealed glass mercury tilt switch
  • Output: digital on/off signal (switch closed or open)
  • Interface: header pins for power, ground and signal
  • Works with: digital inputs on Arduino, ESP32, ESP8266 and Raspberry Pi

Mercury Tilt Switch Module Applications

  • Tilt and tip-over alarms
  • Detecting when a box, lid or device is turned over
  • Simple orientation sensing in toys and robots
  • Anti-theft and movement alerts
  • Learning about digital inputs in electronics classes

What's in the Box

  • 1 × mercury tilt switch module

Tip: The switch contains mercury, which is toxic, so never bend, drop or break the glass capsule. Add a short software debounce, because the mercury can bounce for a few milliseconds when the module moves.
