Description

The MQ-2 Smoke Gas sensor module detects smoke and flammable gases such as LPG, butane, propane, methane and hydrogen, as well as alcohol vapour. Its tin dioxide sensing element lowers its resistance when these gases are present, and the module gives both an analog output for measuring changes and a digital output that switches at a threshold you set with the on-board potentiometer. It is widely used in Arduino and ESP32 gas leak alarms and smoke detection projects.

MQ-2 Smoke Gas Sensor Specifications

  • Sensor: MQ-2 metal-oxide (tin dioxide) gas sensor
  • Detects: LPG, butane, propane, methane, hydrogen, alcohol and smoke
  • Detection range (datasheet): 200–5000 ppm LPG and propane, 300–5000 ppm butane and hydrogen, 5000–20000 ppm methane, 100–2000 ppm alcohol
  • Supply voltage: 5 V (heater 5 V ± 0.1 V)
  • Heater power: less than 800 mW
  • Outputs: AO (analog voltage) and DO (digital, threshold set with the potentiometer)
  • Pins: VCC, GND, DO, AO

MQ-2 Smoke Gas Sensor Applications

  • LPG and butane leak alarms for kitchens and gas cylinders
  • Smoke detection in Arduino and ESP32 safety projects
  • Switching a buzzer, relay or fan when gas is detected
  • IoT alerts sent to a phone over Wi-Fi
  • Gas sensing experiments in schools and universities

What's in the Box

  • 1 × MQ-2 smoke and gas sensor module

Tip: Let the heater warm up for a few minutes before trusting the readings, and run a new sensor for 24 hours or more before calibrating. This module is great for hobby alarms and learning, but it is not a certified gas or smoke detector, so do not rely on it alone for safety.
