Description
The MQ-6 Liquefied Isobutane Propane Sensor module detects LPG, isobutane and propane, the gases found in cooking gas cylinders and lighter fuel. Its tin dioxide sensing element lowers its resistance as the gas level rises, and the module gives both an analog output for measuring changes and a digital output that switches at a threshold you set with the on-board potentiometer. It is well suited to gas leak alarms with Arduino or ESP32.
MQ-6 Liquefied Isobutane Propane Sensor Specifications
- Sensor: MQ-6 metal-oxide (tin dioxide) gas sensor
- Detects: LPG, isobutane and propane, with low sensitivity to alcohol and smoke
- Detection range (datasheet): 200–10,000 ppm
- Supply voltage: 5 V (heater 5 V ± 0.1 V)
- Heater power: up to about 750 mW
- Outputs: AO (analog voltage) and DO (digital, threshold set with the potentiometer)
- Pins: VCC, GND, DO, AO
MQ-6 Liquefied Isobutane Propane Sensor Applications
- LPG leak alarms for kitchens, gas cylinders and heaters
- Switching a buzzer, relay or exhaust fan when gas is detected
- IoT gas alerts over Wi-Fi with an ESP32
- Gas sensing experiments in schools and universities
What's in the Box
- 1 × MQ-6 gas sensor module
Tip: Let the heater warm up for a few minutes before taking readings, and run it for about 24 hours the first time for best accuracy. Power it from a 5 V supply that can deliver about 150 mA, and treat it as a hobby sensor, not a replacement for a certified gas detector.
