Description

The MQ-8 Hydrogen Gas Sensor is a semiconductor gas sensor with high sensitivity to hydrogen (H2) and low sensitivity to alcohol, LPG and cooking fumes. Its tin dioxide (SnO2) element changes resistance as the hydrogen level rises, giving an analog signal for hydrogen leak detectors, battery room alarms and Arduino gas sensing projects.

MQ-8 Hydrogen Gas Sensor Specifications

  • Sensing material: tin dioxide (SnO2)
  • Target gas: hydrogen (H2)
  • Detection range: 100–10,000 ppm H2
  • Heater voltage: 5 V
  • Output: analog, read as a voltage across a load resistor
  • Sensor pins: 6 (2 heater pins and 2 pairs of sensing pins)
  • Preheat: over 24 hours before first accurate use

MQ-8 Hydrogen Gas Sensor Applications

  • Hydrogen leak detection in labs and workshops
  • Battery charging rooms, where lead-acid batteries can release hydrogen
  • Fuel cell and electrolysis experiments
  • Gas alarm projects with Arduino or ESP32

What's in the Box

  • 1 × MQ-8 hydrogen gas sensor

Tip: The heater draws a fair amount of current and gets hot, so power it from a solid 5 V supply rather than a microcontroller pin. With the bare sensor, read the voltage across a load resistor between the sensing pins and ground with an analog input, and always calibrate in clean air after warm-up.
