Description

The Multi-function Shield is a learning shield for the Arduino Uno that puts a 4-digit 7-segment display, LEDs, push buttons, a buzzer and a potentiometer on one board. Plug it on top of the Uno and you can practise outputs, inputs, analog reading and shift registers without any breadboard wiring, which makes it popular in classrooms and beginner courses.

Multi-function Shield Specifications

  • Compatible board: Arduino Uno and boards with the same header layout
  • Display: 4-digit 7-segment LED display driven by two 74HC595 shift registers (latch D4, clock D7, data D8)
  • LEDs: 4 LEDs on D10, D11, D12 and D13
  • Buttons: 3 push buttons on A1, A2 and A3, plus a reset button
  • Potentiometer: trimmer potentiometer on A0
  • Buzzer: on D3
  • Sensor socket: for an LM35 temperature sensor on A4 (sensor not included)

Multi-function Shield Applications

  • Learning Arduino inputs, outputs and analog reading
  • Counters, timers, clocks and stopwatches on the 4-digit display
  • Simple games and reaction testers using the buttons and buzzer
  • Electronics classes and STEM workshops

What's in the Box

  • 1 × Multi-function Shield

Tip: The LEDs and buzzer are active-low, so writing LOW turns them on. Set pin 3 HIGH in setup() to keep the buzzer quiet, and remove jumper J1 before using an LM35 on A4, because A4 is shared with I2C SDA.
