Description

The MultiVibrator CD4047 is a low-power CMOS IC that works as an astable (free-running) or monostable (one-shot) multivibrator. One external resistor and one capacitor set the timing, and the chip gives complementary Q and Q-bar outputs with a 50% duty cycle in astable mode. This makes it a favourite for push-pull inverter drivers, square-wave generators and pulse timers.

MultiVibrator CD4047 Specifications

  • Type: CMOS low-power monostable/astable multivibrator (CD4047B)
  • Supply voltage: 3 V to 18 V
  • Pins: 14 (VDD on pin 14, VSS on pin 7)
  • Outputs: Q and Q-bar (50% duty cycle in astable mode) plus an oscillator output
  • Astable mode: free-running or gated, with true and complement enable inputs
  • Monostable mode: triggers on a rising or falling edge, retriggerable, with an external reset
  • Timing: one external resistor and capacitor; Q period about 4.4 RC in astable mode, pulse width about 2.48 RC in monostable mode

MultiVibrator CD4047 Applications

  • Push-pull MOSFET drive for 12 V DC to AC inverters
  • Square-wave and clock generators
  • One-shot pulse timers and time-delay circuits
  • Frequency division and frequency multiplication
  • Electronics labs and university digital electronics courses

What's in the Box

  • 1 × CD4047 multivibrator IC

Tip: Wire the mode-control pins exactly as the datasheet shows for astable or monostable use, and never leave CMOS inputs floating. Handle the chip with antistatic care and add a 100 nF decoupling capacitor between VDD and VSS.
