Oval Gear Flow Sensor

The Oval Gear Flow Sensor measures the volume and flow rate of liquids using two meshing oval gears. As liquid passes through, it turns the gears, and each turn moves a fixed amount of liquid from the inlet to the outlet, so counting the turns gives an accurate measure of volume. This positive-displacement method stays accurate with thicker liquids, which is its main advantage over turbine-type flow sensors.

Tip: Read the pulses on an interrupt pin and convert them to litres using the K-factor (pulses per litre) from the datasheet, or calibrate by passing a known volume through the sensor. Fit a filter before the sensor, because the oval gears run with tight clearances and particles can jam them. Check which liquids, pressures and temperatures it is rated for before use.
