Description
The PC817 is a single-channel optocoupler that combines an infrared LED and a phototransistor in a 4-pin package. When current flows through the LED, the phototransistor switches on, passing a signal between two circuits that have no electrical connection. It is used to isolate microcontrollers from mains, motor and other high-voltage or noisy circuits.
PC817 Optocoupler Specifications
- Type: phototransistor optocoupler, 1 channel
- Pins: 4 (1 = anode, 2 = cathode, 3 = emitter, 4 = collector)
- Isolation voltage: 5000 V rms
- LED forward voltage: 1.2 V typical, 1.4 V max at 20 mA
- LED forward current: 50 mA max
- Collector-emitter voltage: 35 V max
- Collector current: 50 mA max
- Current transfer ratio: 50–600 % at 5 mA
PC817 Optocoupler Applications
- Isolating Arduino or ESP32 inputs from 12 V and 24 V signals
- Interfacing circuits that use separate grounds
- Noise isolation for motor and relay control
- Feedback loops in switching power supplies
- Electronics education and prototyping
What's in the Box
- 1 × PC817 optocoupler
Tip: Always drive the LED side through a series resistor: about 330 Ω from a 5 V pin gives roughly 10 mA. On the output side, connect a pull-up resistor such as 10 kΩ from the collector to your logic supply and read the signal at the collector.
