Description
The Pulse Sensor, Heart Rate Sensor is an optical sensor that picks up your pulse from a fingertip or earlobe. It shines light into the skin and measures the small changes in reflected light as blood flows with each heartbeat, producing an analog signal that an Arduino or ESP32 can read and turn into beats per minute (BPM). It is a popular part for wearable, health-tech and biology class projects.
Pulse Sensor, Heart Rate Sensor Specifications
- Sensing method: optical (photoplethysmography), LED and light sensor
- Output: analog signal
- Supply voltage: 3.3 V to 5 V
- Connections: 3 wires (signal, VCC, GND)
- Placement: fingertip or earlobe
- Works with: Arduino analog inputs and ESP32 ADC pins
Pulse Sensor, Heart Rate Sensor Applications
- Heart rate monitors that show BPM on an OLED or LCD display
- Wearable and fitness projects
- Biofeedback and exercise experiments
- Biology, health science and STEM classes
- ESP32 projects that send heart rate data over Wi-Fi
What's in the Box
- 1 × pulse sensor (heart rate sensor)
Tip: Rest your finger lightly and keep still, since pressing hard or moving changes the reading; shading the sensor from bright light also helps. The PulseSensor Playground library for Arduino detects the beats for you. This is a hobby sensor, not a medical device, so do not use it for diagnosis.
