Description

The TCS230 Color Recognition Sensor Module detects the colour of an object and turns it into a signal a microcontroller can read. The TCS230 chip has an 8 × 8 array of photodiodes with red, green, blue and clear filters, and converts the light level into a square wave whose frequency rises with intensity. White LEDs on the board light up the target, so it works well for colour sorting, colour tracking and colour-matching projects with Arduino or ESP32.

TCS230 Color Recognition Sensor Module Specifications

  • Sensor chip: TCS230 programmable colour light-to-frequency converter
  • Photodiodes: 64 (16 red, 16 green, 16 blue and 16 clear)
  • Output: square wave (50% duty cycle) with a frequency proportional to light intensity
  • Filter select: S2 and S3 pins choose red, green, blue or clear
  • Frequency scaling: S0 and S1 pins set 2%, 20% or 100% output, or power down
  • Supply voltage: 2.7 V to 5.5 V
  • Illumination: on-board white LEDs

TCS230 Color Recognition Sensor Module Applications

  • Colour sorting machines for sweets, balls and small parts
  • Colour-tracking and line-following robots, including competition robots
  • Reading colour codes and markers
  • Checking paint, product or LED colours
  • STEM projects on light and colour

What's in the Box

  • 1 × TCS230 colour recognition sensor module

Tip: Set S0 HIGH and S1 LOW for 20% scaling, which suits the Arduino pulseIn() function. Calibrate by reading a white and a black surface first, then map each colour reading between them, and shield the sensor from room light for steadier results.
