TIP42C

The TIP42C is a PNP bipolar power transistor in a TO-220 package, rated for 100 V and 6 A continuous collector current. It is the complementary partner of the NPN TIP41C, so the two are often used together in push-pull audio output stages, motor drivers and linear power supplies. Its metal tab bolts to a heatsink for higher-power work.

Tip: As a PNP device, the TIP42C turns on when the base is pulled lower than the emitter, so connect the emitter to the positive supply and place the load between the collector and ground. Use a heatsink when it dissipates more than a watt or two, and remember that the tab is connected to the collector.
