Transistor 2N3053

The Transistor 2N3053 is an NPN silicon transistor in a TO-39 metal can, made for medium-power switching and amplifier circuits. It handles up to 0.7 A of collector current and 40 V collector–emitter, and its metal case spreads heat well, so it is a common choice for relay and lamp drivers, audio driver stages and small RF amplifiers.

Tip: On the TO-39 package the collector is connected to the metal case, so keep the case away from other parts or insulate it from a heatsink. Use a base resistor (for example 1 kΩ from a 5 V pin) and fit a flyback diode such as a 1N4007 across relay coils.
